Why split expenses with Budgetto

  • Split by headcount

Three families of 4, 4 and 3? Each pays for the people they bring. With friends, everyone is simply a group of one.

  • Only your share in the budget

Other people’s shares aren’t your spending: they stay out of the monthly budget and categories, so household numbers stay real.

  • Who still owes you

The “To receive” card shows open credits, trips included. When they pay you back, tap “Received” — your budget doesn’t change.

  • One-tap reminders

With “Remind” you send their share on WhatsApp with amount and date. No awkward messages to write.

How to split an expense

  1. 1

    Save the expense

Scan the dinner receipt or enter the amount as a quick expense.

  2. 2

    Add the groups

Tap “Split with others” and set how many people each family or friend has. Fix an amount manually if needed.

  3. 3

    Collect the shares

Mark who paid you back and remind the others of their share.

The simple way to handle shared expenses

Whoever organizes a dinner, a barbecue or a trip with friends often pays for everyone up front. €132 leaves your account, but the real cost to your family is much lower: log it as one expense and your monthly budget looks blown when it isn’t.

Budgetto keeps the two apart: only your share goes into the budget and category insights, while other people’s shares become money owed to you. If someone never pays, “Won’t pay me back” moves their share onto you in the month of the expense.

It’s not a group ledger with cross balances: it’s the fastest way to split one expense and keep your household budget accurate. And it’s included free in Budgetto.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do you split a bill between families of different sizes?

Set how many people each group has: Budgetto works out the cost per person and each family pays proportionally. With €132 and families of 4, 4 and 3, the shares are €48, €48 and €36.

Can I set a different share for someone?

Yes, tap a group’s amount and fix it manually — for example for those who didn’t drink wine. The rest is re-split among the others by headcount.

What happens to my budget when I get paid back?

Nothing: other people’s shares were never counted in your budget. Marking “Received” just closes the credit.

Is splitting expenses a paid feature?

No, it’s included in the free plan, for scanned receipts and quick expenses, at home and on trips.
